A mother has a plan for the future of her child. She learns him some special rules and wants him to obey them. and if he doesn't she might threaten him and punish him and he might scream and cry. and she still loves him.
I'm not sayin' that I don't believe in God (and I'm not sayin' that I do believe in God)! But I certainly don't believe in THIS God! Don't you see how ridiculous this story is?! I think God himself (if any) is laughing at us, and that's because of what we do believe in, not because of our doubts!
Perhaps "fire" is used to clear us from all of dirths and unpurities.
An important mistake in your story is that God does not only require us "not to do some stuff", he have also asked us to "do some stuff" in the world. This is sometimes called "masir-e-roshd-e-ma'navi".
